Thirukkadaiyur, a renowned temple town in the Nagapattinam district on the east coast of Tamil Nadu. The ruins of the 11th century original temple known as Thirumeignanam (erstwhile Thirukkadaiyur Mayanam) can be seen at the coast. The present temple with same architectural plan of the original temple was built at a later period and the temple is thronged by the devotees praying for long lifespan. The prime deity worshipped in this holy place is Lord Shiva. The Amritaghateswarar and Abirami Temple in this hamlet of Thirukkadaiyur are associated with the mythical stories of Markandeya and Abirami Battar. This holy place is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva rescued and saved the Markendeya, the son of an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, from the Yama (the God of death). Local devotees believe that Markandeya worshipped Amritaghateswarar, a form of Lord Shiva, in Thirukkadaiyur.
